LPEA Net Metering Program encourages small scale renewable energy projects

Net Metering Overview

As part of our commitment to renewable energy, LPEA’s Net Metering Policy allows operators of small renewable generation systems (25 kilowatts or less) to feed their power into the electric grid and spin their meters backwards. More than 175 photovoltaic and wind generators are currently interconnected with LPEA’s electric distribution system.  LPEA offers a Renewable Generation REC payment (per Policy 359).  It is a one-time REC payment for residential or small commercial, grid-tied installations located within LPEA’s service territory.  In order to receive a REC payment, LPEA will purchase the Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from the generator.

With federal solar tax credits for photovoltaic systems (approximately 30% contact a tax expert), local installers have told us to expect the number of installations to increase. www.dsireusa.org/solar

Many utilities install two meters and either provide no credit or pay only the avoided cost (wholesale cost) for renewable generation.

LPEA allows the meter to spin backwards up to the point where a member’s monthly generation offsets all their monthly usage.  The excess generation is carried over for a twelve month period ending in April.  In April of each year, the member is credited at LPEA’s average wholesale cost. This policy may eliminate the need for members to integrate costly batteries into their system; it values member generation at a higher rate and helps to ensure a safe installation for both the customer and utility workers.

Net Metering Details:

  • One electric meter allowed to “spin backwards” per location.
  • Customer’s generation must be intended to offset part or all of their electrical energy needs at that location.
  • Electric grid is used to store net excess generation.
  • Net excess generation credited at average wholesale cost for a one year period ending in April when a check is issued.
  • For renewable systems under 25 kilowatts.
  • Available to commercial and residential customers.
