LPEA members invited to 2010 Annual Meeting, May 8

Director elections in two districts to be determined

DURANGO, Colo. – Two new members could potentially be elected to the La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) Board of Directors during the electric cooperative’s 2010 Annual Meeting set for  Saturday, May 8 at Fort Lewis College – Student Union Ballroom.

Annual Meeting registration opens at 9 a.m., with the business meeting commencing at 10:30 a.m., at which time director voting will close and ballot counting begin. A complimentary luncheon, catered by Fort Lewis College, follows the meeting.

In District 1 (Archuleta County, with nearly 7,400 eligible residential and commercial voters), incumbent Terry Alley faces challenger J.B. Smith. Harold (Harry) Riegle is challenging incumbent Harry Goff for the seat in District 3 (essentially the City of Durango, including more than 7,100 eligible voters).

In Districts 2 and 4, incumbent board members Tom Compton and Pam Patton, respectively, had no challengers. Pursuant to Article III, Section 5 of the bylaws, these board members have been reappointed to their seats for the next three years.

As an electric cooperative, LPEA encourages all who pay monthly electric bills – businesses and individuals who are member-owners – to attend and participate in the annual informational event. Ample parking is available at Fort Lewis College, located at 1000 Rim Drive, Durango. Attendees are advised to park in Parking Lot L, just north of the Student Union. Signs will be posted and golf cart-shuttles available for those needing assistance from their vehicles to the Student Union.

“The Annual Meeting is a terrific opportunity to learn first-hand about the successes of and challenges facing La Plata Electric, as well as visit with the board members in person. We represent the member-owners, and we are interested in everyone’s input,” said Terry Alley, LPEA board president.

Presentations scheduled include reports from Alley and LPEA CEO Greg Munro. Ken Anderson, executive vice president/general manager, Tri-State Generation and Transmission, will be on hand to discuss Tri-State’s look to the future of electricity generation and costs. Kent Singer, executive director, Colorado Rural Electric Association, will review statewide issues, and LPEA attorney Barry Spear will provide an update on any legal issues faced by LPEA in 2009.

LPEA member-owners who attend the Annual Meeting will receive a variety of complimentary energy efficiency items, including a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), digital thermometer and more. Members also receive a $5 credit on their electric bill, and are eligible for door prizes.

Recognizing that the event can provide an opportunity to support other community organizations, LPEA also partners with United Blood Services to hold a blood drive in conjunction with the meeting. Attendees, as well as community members, can schedule to donate blood before or during the meeting (www.bloodhero.com ) at the Student Union.
