Free Information Series to discuss LPEA’s new automated metering infrastructure

DURANGO, Colo. – As part of its Free Information Series, La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) will host “Be ‘Smart’ About Meters,” a presentation discussing LPEA’s new Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Presentations will be held in Durango on Thursday, April 26, and Pagosa Springs on Tuesday, May 1, 2012.

“New digital technology has prompted LPEA to begin upgrading our aging electric meter reading system’s infrastructure,” said Ron Meier, manager of engineering, noting that parts are no longer available for repair of the old system. “We’re hearing that there’s some mis-information being spread around. We want to dispel any rumors and explain the advantages and the things this new infrastructure can do to help our members manage their energy consumption.”

Two presentations will be held in Durango on April 26 at 3 and 5:30 p.m. in the cooperative’s multi-purpose room, 45 Stewart St. (Bodo Industrial Park). In Pagosa Springs on May 1, the presentations will be held at 3 and 5:30 p.m. in the Ross Aragon Community Center, South Conference Room, 451 Hot Springs Blvd.

So-called “Smart Meters” are currently being installed throughout the United States as the industry begins to upgrade the electrical grid. Topics to be covered at LPEA’s presentation include radio frequency emissions, security, privacy issues, benefits and cost savings, plus energy management capabilities to be available to members.

“If you have any concern at all about LPEA’s AMI system, we encourage you to attend,” added Meier. “We’re very excited about the new infrastructure. We know it will greatly improve LPEA’s reliability and service to our members while reducing environmental and fiscal costs.”

Pre-registration is not required. For further information, contact Meier at 970.382.3513 or rmeier@lpea.coop.

LPEA, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative, provides to its more than 30,000 members with in excess of 42,000 meters, safe, reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost, while being environmentally responsible. For additional information, visit www.lpea.coop.
