Safety is paramount at La Plata Electric Association, and to help members learn more about the "power" of electricity, LPEA line crews and staff members offer a variety of specially-designed programs and demonstrations throughout the year. One goal is to reach all 4th and 5th grade students throughout LPEA's service territory to help them garner an appreciation for electrical current.
Programs offered include Exploring Magnets (helping children discover how magnets work) and Energy Efficiency/Renewable Education (including demonstrating the difference between energy efficient light bulbs and incandescent, as well as a beginning discussion of renewable energy).
The Electrical Safety session features a table-top demonstration complete with miniature high voltage lines. For older students and adults, LPEA's linemen bring actual electrical equipment for an Arc Demonstration (as pictured with Journeyman Lineman Kevin Hoover). Audience members see the harm electricity can do to the human body in "real" terms.
