DURANGO, Colo. – More than 1,200 members of La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) were sporadically and temporarily impacted this afternoon/evening, due to high winds throughout the region, and some remain out of power at this writing.
Numerous electrical outages have been reported to LPEA since approximately 5 p.m. today. At this writing a final number is not available (and the winds have now continued to blow, so the system may feel an additional impact this evening). More than 20 outages of various sizes were reported during the afternoon.
While initial outages were the result of wires clashing and wind-blown branches disrupting the lines, as the winds increased, LPEA’s power lines were brought down. Though details have not been confirmed at this time to LPEA, a downed line along Archuleta CR 500, which impacted 340 members, did spark a fire.
LPEA’s crews are in the field and will remain in service through the night until all power is restored.
